My dad recommended an old Ellery Queen mystery,
The Egyptian Cross. The fun part about these old Ellery Queen books is that once the main story is told, there is a challenge to the reader to figure out from all the clues, not guess, who did it before old Ellery solves it for you. I didn't guess correctly (yes, I guessed) but at least I did, at one point, guess the correct person and motive even though I dismissed it and went in a wrong direction. I wasn't into it for about the first half of the book. There were a huge pile of obvious red herrings and the story didn't begin to be cohesive until about halfway through. I might pick up a few more sometime in the future.
